In his autobiography, Nobel Peace Laureate and the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship namesake Dr. Albert Schweitzer described the obstacles and challenges faced by change agents as “boulders,” noting:
“Anyone who proposes to do good must not expect people to roll stones out of his way, but must accept his lot calmly if they even roll a few more on it. A strength which becomes clearer and stronger through experiences of such obstacles is the only strength that can conquer them.”
At the Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program, we help and support our Fellows as they develop skills and discover the strength they need to conceptualize and carry out yearlong service projects that address unmet health needs. Through this process, we develop our Fellows as servant leaders.
At Beyond Boulders, we highlight their stories — and the stories of the community members they serve. We place those stories in the context of an overarching movement to achieve health equity, and we share news and resources of relevance to emerging and established professionals who are working to build healthier and more just communities.
