Today is the Day of Giving here in Pittsburgh! We are proud to live in one of the most generous cities in the world, and this day truly embodies the mission that Albert Schweitzer himself endeavored to achieve.
Our fellows work diligently each year on projects that provide services to the neighborhoods in our community that need it the most. To provide some insight into how far your donation will go with the Schweitzer Fellowship Program, we wanted to share the “wish list” for 2016/17 Fellow Amanda Hagl. Amanda will be working with underserved asthma patients to improve their health literacy and efficacy of inhaler use at the Hill House and the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center. By fulfilling these needs, she will provide asthma health education classes and information about the existing resources available to underprivileged people suffering from asthma in Pittsburgh, which possesses some of the poorest air quality in the U.S.
Amanda’s Wish List:
- HEPA filters: $14 x 4= $56
- Box Fans: $16 x 4= $64
The HEPA filters and box fans would be used to make an air filter. This activity would be used to help families improve their indoor air quality by filtering out particulate matter.
- Clay pots: 10 pots for $16
- English Ivy plants or peace lilies= $10 x 4= $40
- Potting soil= $5
Ivy and peace lilies are plants that are good at improving indoor air quality. The children would pain the pots and then plant the plant the ivy or peace lilies.
- Pool noodles: $4 ($1 per noodle)
Pool noodles can be used to create draft stoppers. Draft stoppers can make homes more energy efficient. When placed in the doorway leading to basements, they can also be used to limit the airflow and prevent radon from making its way to the upstairs.
- Food for monthly meetings $ 30 per session x 28 sessions= $840
These sessions will take place at 6:30pm. Families will be more inclined to attend the sessions if they do not have to prepare dinner beforehand.
- Spray bottle $1.00x 8= $8.00
- Vinegar $3.00 x 2 bottles= $6.00
This activity will involve families making green cleaning products.
Total= $1,039
