Meet Julia Saintz, a 2018-2019 Environmental Fellow!
Julia’s project will focus on providing companionship for elders in the community who are living in senior living centers or nursing homes. As a result of that companionship, she will work with elders to find ways to improve the community’s sustainability practices and reduce environmental impact.
Senior citizens have always been important in Julia’s service and professional work.
“In my previous jobs, senior citizens were some of my superheros,” Julia said. “They were the leaders in their community because they had the time — they were retired — and they had the knowledge of their community.”
Julia attained her undergraduate degree in History at Shippensburg University. After graduation, she went to Nevada to serve in AmeriCorps then traveled to Washington D.C. for the Alice Ferguson Foundation. At the Alice Ferguson Foundation, she focused on litter prevention and organizing litter pick ups. Julia is currently a graduate student pursuing her Masters of Sustainability at Chatham University Falk School of Sustainability & Environment.
Julia grew up all around Pennsylvania; she’s lived in Harrisburg, Altoona, and Carlisle. This past summer Julia moved to Pittsburgh!
Although Julia is new to city, she loves to go exploring. In her free time, you can find Julia kayaking on the Allegheny river; going on hikes with her adorable dog, Orion; or grabbing an iced tea at Arnold’s Tea on the North Side. You might even run into her while she’s geocaching around Pittsburgh!
